7 7 To setup a custom virtual host, we need to follow these steps:
8 8
9   ===Allow virtual hosts===
  9 ===Check if virtual hosts are allowed===
10 10 By default, Apache2 uses the ##/etc/apache2/vhosts.d/*.conf## files (the location of the virtual hosts, one configuration file per virtual host in /etc/apache2/vhosts.d/), therefore per default we do not need to indicate that this file will be included during the runtime of Apache.
11 11
12 12 See: /etc/apache2/httpd.conf:
13 13 %%
  14 cat /etc/apache2/httpd.conf
  15 %%
  16
  17 See uncommented?
  18 %%
14 19 IncludeOptional /etc/apache2/vhosts.d/*.conf
15 20 %%
16 21
22 ===Create a custom domain in the hosts file of your system====
17 23

27
  24 Change to user root
  25 %% sudo su%%
28 26
29 27 Once you have installed and checked the status of Apache, go to its Web-root directory and create a new directory as mentioned below.
30   %% cd /srv/www/htdocs/ %%
  28 %% cd /srv/www/%%
31 29
32   %% sudo mkdir myproject%%
  30 %% mkdir myproject%%
  31
  32 %% cd /srv/www/myproject %%
  33
  34 %% mkdir htdocs%%
33 35
34 36 Create a new file in the above mentioned directory by using the following command.
35 37
36   %% echo -e '<html>\n<html>\n\t<body>\n\t\t<h1>Welcome World!</h1>\n\t</body>\n</html>' > /srv/www/htdocs/myproject/index.html %%
  38 %% echo -e '<html>\n<html>\n\t<body>\n\t\t<h1>Welcome World!</h1>\n\t</body>\n</html>' > /srv/www/myproject/htdocs/index.html %%
37 39
38 40 Create a new virtualhost configuration file in the below mentioned directory and configure it as follows.
39 41
40 42 /etc/apache2/conf.d/vhost.conf
41 43
42 44 %% sudo su%%
43   %%echo -e 'DocumentRoot "/srv/www/htdocs/myproject"\nServerName "myproject"' > /etc/apache2/conf.d/vhost.conf %%
  45 %%echo -e 'DocumentRoot "/srv/www/myproject"\nServerName "myproject"' > /etc/apache2/conf.d/vhost.conf %%
44 46
45 47 Did it work?
46 48 %% cat /etc/apache2/conf.d/vhost.conf%%
49 51 You should see
50 52
51 53 %% DocumentRoot "/srv/www/htdocs/myproject"
52    ServerName "myproject"
  54  ServerName "myproject.example.com"
53 55  %%
